Nestled on the shores of Bay of Bengal, St. Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Church is situated on the East Coast Road (ECR) at Injambakkam, Chennai, a very beautiful, calm and serene atmosphere.
- November,1978: Mrs. Baby Jacob, W/o. Mr. P.M Jacob of Plackal family was magnanimous to donate one acre of land to St. Thomas Orthodox Cathedral, Broadway.
- 19th April, Easter day of 1987: Catholicose and Malankara Metropolitan, H. H. Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Mathews I, laid the foundation stone for a Retreat centre. From 1988, every Year, on October 2nd, a retreat is being held at this centre.
- 29th November 1998: Under the governance of our Mother Church, St. Thomas Orthodox Cathedral, Broadway, Chennai, Holy Qurbana was commenced every 5th Sunday. Very. Rev. George Varghese Cor- Episcopa celebrated the first Holy Qurbana.
- February 2000: Holy Qurbana services shifted from the 5th Sunday to the 1st Sunday of every month. From then on, this centre was known as St. Mary’s Orthodox Chapel, Injambakkam.
- July 2002: After carrying out necessary renovation and alterations, the then Diocesan Bishop, H. G. Dr Yakoob Mar Irenaios issued a Kalpana to conduct Holy Qurbana on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays of the month.
- 15th June 2008: H. G. Dr Yakoob Mar Irenaios laid the foundation stone for a new church.
- June 2009: The then Diocesan Bishop, H. G. Dr Yakoob Mar Irenaios issued a Kalpana to conduct Holy Qurbana on all Sundays
- 14th August 2011: With the growing number of residents in the area, the chapel was declared as an independent church with the name, St. Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Church, Injambakkam, w.e.f. 1st September 2011, by the then Diocesan Metropolitan, H.G. Dr Yuhanon Mar Diascoros. The new church was the 11th parish in Madras under the Madras Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.
- 18th March 2012: General Body of the church constituted the Building Committee for the new church project.
- 9th March 2014: Our Diocesan Metropolitan, H.G. Dr Yuhanon Mar Diascoros performed the ground-breaking ceremony and commencement of the construction.
- 17th, 18th March 2017: H. G. Dr Yakoob Mar Irenaios, Metropolitan, Kochi Diocese along with H. G. Abraham Mar Epiphanos, Metropolitan, Sulthan Bathery Diocese and our Diocesan Metropolitan, H. G. Dr Yuhanon Mar Diascoros consecrated the church in the presence of priests and believers from different churches. Our Vicar Very. Rev. George Varghese Cor-Episcopa and church managing committee members made all necessary arrangements.
